Two From The Project: Blood Knot And Juggernaut Gloves

BLOOD KNOT GLOVE

It seems, season after season, as soon as the weather and water get cold, I start searching for the perfect fly-fishing glove. And each time I find options that are too bulky and cumbersome, not really all-day waterproof, and they are super fly-line catchy. Fortunately, all my glove problems have been solved with the Fly Project Blood Knot waterproof wool glove.

The first time I tried these gloves was on a very rainy day in north Idaho. I was impressed that they were completely wet on the outside and dry as a bone on the inside, made possible by a durable waterproof, breathable membrane separating the dry from the wet, a similar concept to breathable waders, just with nylon and spandex on the outside and a blend of comfy acrylic, merino wool and spandex on the inside. I even took the gloves off, wrung them out, and they were still dry on the inside. The “skeletal” grip on the palm and fingers is extremely grippy even when wet, which helps tremendously when pulling oars in rain, sleet and snow. These gloves offer a snug fit, which is also crucial when rowing the boat, working the tiller on a jet sled, or swinging a rainy steelhead run with a big spey rod. And if you need to manage an anchor line, pull a crab or shrimp pot, or bail out the boat in a major deluge, you’ll have a secure grip. In fact, the Fly Project named these gloves because you get that waterproof protection while maintaining the ability to tie a blood knot while wearing them. Ultimately, these gloves keep your hands warm and dry. That means you can stay on the water all -day and enjoy yourself while doing so. This I know: Nobody likes cold and wet hands. These gloves are the solution to that problem.

The Fly Project’s Blood Knot Gloves make the perfect gift for any outdoor enthusiast who needs a quality wool glove that is truly waterproof. In my mind, these are a great value. $45

JUGGERNAUT GLOVE

While the Blood Knot Glove offers ultimate dexterity and comfort, the Fly Project’s Juggernaut Glove is a rower’s dream—a closed-cell neoprene, fully waterproof, guide-worthy glove that’s a solid 4 millimeters thick.

The Juggernaut is bulkier than the Blood Knot, but that closed-cell neoprene is impervious to the weather, and a mix of neoprene and nylon combines for a textured “Armortex” palm that holds tight to the oars and anchor lines or whatever else you need, even when it’s snowing and blowing in the height of winter. That Armortex (i.e. kevlar) grip is also cut resistant, abrasion resistant and tear resistant, so these gloves should give you many seasons of faithful work.

As mentioned above, a good set of gloves keeps your hands warm and toasty, dry and functional all day in foul weather, whether that’s a spring dump of snow, a summer hailstorm, a fall cold blast from Canada, or a winter day when you’re shoveling snow off the raft and pulling oars at 33 degrees. Know this: Know this: When it’s miserable outside but you gotta’ fish, the Juggernaut is there to faithfully keep the adventure going.  $69
