SESSION 1: March 18-22, 2026
sESSION 2: NOVEMBER 11-15, 2026

Trout Spey Camp is part of our House of Fly Fish Camp series—our spin on the classic guided fishing trip. Fish Camp experiences are a bit less formal than a standard trip and built around the kind of adventure we’d plan for ourselves: good people, great food, plenty of time on the water, and some photo-worthy fish.

What makes this Fish Camp extra special? It’s on our home water, Montana’s Missouri River, where we cut our teeth with trout spey. And we’ll host you in our own eclectic fishing lodge, pairing you each day with the same guides we fish with. Each evening you’ll enjoy themed dinners built and served by our incredible chefs and wait staff. We’ll take care of everything—guides, food, lodging, and logistics—so you can just show up, fish hard, and enjoy the experience. This is a perfect opportunity for anyone taking a deep-dive into trout spey, whether you’ve previously felt the tug on steelhead water or are picking up a two-hander for the first time. We know that sensation when you get things right and launch a cast all the way to the far bank, and we know what a shock to the system a tight-line grab can be. During your week of trout spey you’ll have an opportunity to learn how we fish the Missouri River. If you are already proficient in spey casting and want to focus on fishing, that’s OK, but we are happy to provide as much of a learning experience as you desire.

Don’t miss out. We welcome you to join for an immersive week of trout spey, and a true local’s look at what makes Montana’s Missouri River and Craig, Montana, Ground Zero for all things trout spey.

Can't make these dates? No problem. We're happy to arrange this Fish Camp package for dates and times that work for you. Reach out anytime —we'd love to make it happen.

FISHING

Our host Fred Telleen met the Missouri River for the first time in 1983 on a road trip to Alaska. In May of 2007 after many mesmerizing trips on I-15 through the Missouri River canyon, he finally decided to stop and fish here. He’s been in the neighborhood ever since and a friendly face you’ll see working behind the counter at The Trout Shop. The MO is famous for dry-fly fishing and during the season there are prolific hatches of midges, mayflies and caddis. While we love fishing during those hatches, Freds love affair with the MO began with a spey rod. We love to swing flies and the Missouri between Craig and Great Falls, Montana is a perfect big water canvas to carve up with two-handed casts. If you have visited during summer or read about the Missouri in the vicinity of Craig, then you know about the accolades for high numbers of 16-22” rainbow and brown trout rising to dry flies amid beautiful scenery. That happens, but they also eat swung flies. In the window of time from November through March, swinging flies can be very productive, and it is how we choose to fish. It is also how we have encountered more brown trout ranging between 22 and inches 28” than any other method

During our peak season of mid-May through mid-October, the Missouri River can be a busy place. From November through March, the window we consider to be best for trout spey, the river is sparsely populated. On our fishing days, you will be matched up with a professional guide who is dialed in trout spey techniques. Be prepared to wade, as the boats or vehicles will be primarily used to access key swing water zones.

GEAR

Click here for a recommended gear list.

There are plenty of tricks that turn an average trout spey angler into a guru. Our guides will share these during your stay at Fish Camp, on the water and after hours over drinks and dinner. They’ll also instruct on proper line and leader setups, plus best practices when knotting flies to the leader for maximum fishiness/effectiveness. You’ll be offered fully dialed in trout spey setups to use during your stay, along with the flies our resident small-batch tyers and guides have identified as true killers on the Missouri. We’ll go through presentation tactics and describe the merits of Skagit versus Scandi, sink-tips, shooting lines—all the little things that make big differences in trout spey.

Ultimately, we want you to be a confident, well-trained trout-spey sniper who can wade into any stream, anywhere, and deploy these tactics to great success. That’s the goal and after five days at Fish Camp, we believe you’ll be on your way.

GETTING TO CRAIG, MT

Craig, Montana is a tiny fishing town with a population of around 40 full-time residents—but don’t let its size fool you. Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN)

Missoula Montana Airport (MSO)
